(g) The general community as disclosed at the Public
Mortuary.
The substance of the reports is as follows:- (a) There is comparatively little venereal disease in
the British resident community. (This does not
apply to members of His Majesty's Naval and Military
forces as to whom accurate statistics are available).
(b) Among the British seafaring community there is a
considerable amount of venereal disease, but in
a large number of the cases the disease has been
contracted outside the Colony. When contracted
locally it can usually be traced to infection from
Fomen not in brothels or to women belonging to the
floating population going on board ships.
and
(a) Among the Portuguese community both Syphilis and
Gonorrhoea existed to a considerable extent during the past three years. Forty-two cases of syphilis were reported, of which twelve were congenital, they were easily cured. Ninety-eight cases of gonorrhoea were reported of which ten were chronic
in spite of all treatment.
(d) There is a great deal of venereal disease among
Chinese of the merchant and shop keeping classes, and so far as could be ascertained it is mainly contracted at certain brothels at West Point, where apparently the prostitutes undergo no examination whatever. The disease is often convey-
!
ed to female members of families. It is stated that | the virulence of the disease is less among the Chinese then among other communities, but that it is more intractable, as they will not carry into effect the instructions given to them, either in the correct manner, or for a sufficiently long time. (e) Owing to the general habit of concealing the
disease it is not possible to give any definite
information
